چکیده

Human-worn exoskeletons have the ability to both augment the physical capacity of its wearer and assist in rehabilitation therapy. Design of these devices that physically interact with the human user is challenging because of user safety and comfort requirements in addition to typical robot performance measures (e.g. quick response, backdriveable etc.). Ultimately, models of the musculoskeletal and mechanical systems need to be combined so that the performance of the integrated human-exoskeleton system can be evaluated and optimized using computer simulations. We propose a novel framework for virtual prototyping of exoskeletons by merging musculoskeletal analysis with simulation-based engineering design. The framework provides a platform in which the design and control algorithm of exoskeletons can be iteratively optimized using three distinct types of performance measures—biomechanical, morphologi -cal, and controller. We present a case study that develops a virtual prototype of an index finger exoskeleton to illustrate the application of the framework using the OpenSim environment.

A Simulation Framework for Virtual Prototyping of Robotic Exoskeletons.

A number of robotic exoskeletons are being developed to provide rehabilitation interventions for those with movement disabilities. We present a systematic framework that allows for virtual prototyping (i.e., design, control, and experimentation (i.e. design, control, and experimentation) of robotic exoskeletons. The framework merges computational musculoskeletal analyses with simulation-based d...

Interfacing Jack And Anybody: Towards Anthropometric Musculoskeletal Digital Human Modeling

Virtual prototyping emerges as a new technology to replace existing physical prototypes for product evaluation, which are costly and time consuming to manufacture. Virtualization technology allows engineers and ergonomists to perform virtual builds and different ergonomic analyses on a product. Digital Human Modelling (DHM) software packages such as Siemens Jack, often integrate with CAD system...

Collision Detection as a Fundamental Technology in VR Based Product Engineering

In the product development process, prototyping is an essential step. Prototypes represent important features of a product, which are to be investigated, evaluated, and improved. They are used to prove design alternatives, to do engineering analysis, manufacturing planning, support managment decisions, and often just to show a product to the customers. The vision of virtual prototyping is to us...

Integrating Virtual Reality for Virtual Prototyping

Business process re-engineering is becoming a main focus in today’s efforts to overcome problems and deficits in the automotive and aerospace industries (e.g., integration in international markets, product complexity, increasing number of product variants, reduction in product development time and cost). In this paper, we investigate the steps needed to apply virtual reality (VR) for virtual pr...
